The African National Congress (ANC) congratulates Banyana Banyana for their sterling performance in the Africa Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON) to reach the semi-finals. We have no doubt that the South African national team will bring the trophy home.
The ANC is alive to the fact that this journey to reach the semi-final was not an easy one but the Banyana Banyana pulled all stops to ensure the nation that they were in the tournament for the long haul.
After beating Nigeria, it was clear that our national team was well on their way to stamp their authority in the AWCON.
The team went on to thrash Equatorial Guinea 7-1 to top the Group B. The weekend 1-1 final score against Zambia further ensured that the Banyana Banyana is set to progress to the semi-final of the tournament.
The ANC calls on the South Africans to rally behind Banyana Banyana as they prepare to go toe to toe against Mali in the semi-final tomorrow, Tuesday.
This is one step closer to the national team in its quest to bring trophy home. A win for Banyana Banyana against Mali in Cape Coast is very important because this will stand them in good stead in that this will be a step towards qualifying them for the 2019 Women's World Cup.
It is important for our nation to support our national team as they continue to demonstration resilience to win the tournament. The ANC calls on South African Football Association (SAFA) and private sector to invest more in the team as it carries the pride of the country following their excellent exhibition in all the games they played.
This team is reason enough for South Africans to feel proud. The ANC wishes the coach Desiree Ellis and her team well in their fight to reach the final qualifier for the 2019 Women’s World Cup. The ANC calls on the team to bring the AWCON trophy home. We urged South Africans to give the team a much deserving support.
This is a key tournament for continental soccer and we urge Banyana Banyana to continue with their winning streak.
